STRUCTURES UNIT
Narrative structure organizes relationships between the literary elements of setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme. Analysis of narrative structure empowers readers to make inferences and draw conclusions.
Throughout the Structures unit, students critically read a variety of fictional texts to analyze narrative structure. In previous units, students examined the various elements in isolation. In this unit, students focus on how the different elements function together.
The unit culminates with the Structures Performance Task, which requires students to demonstrate understanding of narrative structure by responding to the Essential Question, How do writers use narrative structures to organize the relationships between the literary elements? The texts for analysis will be new to students to demonstrate transfer.
